Efforts to lessen the amount of garbage ending up on the burgeoning landfill continue thanks to a partnership between Tropical Shipping, recycling company All Caribbean and St. Maarten Recycling NV. Locally expired canned sodas and beers and cardboard are collected and shipped off-island by Tropical Shipping. The current load from St. Maarten consists of some 462,000 beer/soda cans and eight tonnes of cardboard. St. Maarten Recycling collects recyclables from commercial companies and others. That company also prepares and loads materials for shipping. With the coming online of St. Maarten, All Caribbean now has six Caribbean islands. More than seven million pounds of recyclable material have been moved from the islands via this partnership over the last 24 months.
